SPF Lip Balm
Why You Need an SPF Lip Balm (And Why We Updated Our Balms for Summer)
Lips are easy to overlook when it comes to sun protection. Most people remember sunscreen for their face or shoulders, but not the one area that’s actually more exposed and less protected than the rest which is why SPF lip balm is important.
The skin on your lips is fundamentally different. It’s thinner, has almost no oil glands, and contains very little melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from UV damage. In practical terms, that means your lips don’t have the same built-in defenses. They burn faster, dry out more easily, and accumulate damage over time so an spf lip balm is crucial for protection.
And that damage isn’t just cosmetic.
Chronic sun exposure is directly linked to conditions like actinic cheilitis, a precancerous change in the lips, and to lip cancer itself. The lower lip, in particular, is one of the most common sites for UV-related oral cancers.
So an SPF lip balm isn’t an extra. It’s basic care.
At HIGHR, our lip balms have always been rooted in hydration and resourcefulness. We make them using leftover organic ingredients from our supply chain like organic castor oil, organic shea butter, and organic sunflower oil. It’s a way of reducing waste while creating something genuinely useful. A product people reach for daily.
Leveling Up with SPF
Those ingredients are deeply nourishing. They soften, restore, and protect the lips from dryness. But they don’t protect from the sun. And during the summer months, that gap matters more.
When lips are coated in rich, emollient ingredients, they can actually be more exposed to UV damage if there’s no SPF layered in. So as we thought about how our balms are used day to day, especially in warmer, sunnier conditions, adding sun protection felt like a natural next step.
Not a reinvention. An evolution. We chose a broad-spectrum SPF 15 lip balm for a reason. Broad-spectrum protection means coverage against both UVB rays, which cause burns, and UVA rays, which contribute to long-term damage. Lips need both, especially with consistent, everyday exposure.
The Chemical vs. Mineral SPF Debate
The next decision was how to deliver that protection without changing what people already love about the balm.
Mineral filters like zinc oxide can be effective, but in lip balms they often come with tradeoffs. A white cast, a heavier feel, and a noticeable taste that can make you less likely to reapply throughout the day. And reapplication is everything.
Our balms were designed to be used often. They’re the kind of product you keep in your pocket or bag and apply without thinking. If adding SPF made that experience worse, it would defeat the purpose.
So we focused on keeping the formula true to itself. The same smooth, hydrating feel. The same organic ingredient base. The same subtle vanilla profile. Just with the addition of broad-spectrum SPF to support your lips when they need it most.
Because the best protection is the kind you’ll actually use.
Our Organic Vanilla Lip Balms are still what they’ve always been. Simple, nourishing, and made with intention. Now, they’re just a little better suited for summer.
